Hullo all,

Are y'all a parent in Eugene?

I have two kids (ix & 12) and am in the running for a chore at that place. I am curious to know your thoughts on Eugene as a place to raise kids, and to be a child. What are its master strengths and weaknesses, and how does information technology compare to other places you may accept lived? Feel free to share your thoughts on the schools also -- are you happy with the quality of education your children are receiving? Merely mainly, are they happy in full general? Is Eugene a good identify to grow up?

Grew upwards and went to schoolhouse in Eugene. I'd say growing upward near and going to Sheldon high school, monroe middle schoolhouse, and holt elementary schoolhouse (Gilham and Cal Young are good likewise) gave me a very normal, typical, suburban American life to grow up in. If your kids were to abound up near downtown and go to, say, South Eugene high school, they would probable accept a very dissimilar experience.

Please feel free to ask me some more than specific questions if yous'd like!

I am raising children in Eugene correct at present and I love information technology. I wish I'd grown upwards here.

Nosotros moved from suburban NYC, where past mutual measures the schools are meliorate. My kids were alee of their peers academically when they started schoolhouse. Class sizes are besides large in Eugene, peculiarly at the lower grades, and course schoolers don't get enough art or music. So why practise I beloved information technology? My kids have keen teachers, the schools practise follow mutual core but they don't seem to "teach to the examination" equally much as they did dorsum east. They do lots of interesting, hands on activities. My form schooler has garden day and lots of outside time. They have bully field trips. Past heart school the differences seem less pronounced and my student has lots of choices and extracurriculars. My oldest goes to Southward Eugene High School and loves it. I believe it is the only school ranked in the top 10 in Oregon that isn't in the Portland metro. It is a fleck more competitive just still naught like where nosotros used to alive.

There are lots of opportunities for kids to get involved in programs at UO, too, academically and otherwise. My kids take taken diverse arts and science classes and camps.

I like that the city is small enough and has decent transportation that teens and tweens tin get around on their ain. Mine similar to take the passenger vehicle downtown, become to 1 of the arcades and get a snack or go to the park with friends. Getting around on public transportation is a good way to build confidence. I'm trying non to bring up another generation who can't buy their ain college textbooks without consulting with their moms on the phone. (But my example: I worked in a college bookstore while I was in graduate school.)

One caveat: if y'all are conservative, scratch all of the in a higher place. You lot'll probably hate everything most it. At least that's how it feels in this forum. Everyone I know in real life is either a lefty or completely apolitical.

Don't call back that's necessarily true. I alive in the neighborhood that feeds into Sheldon, and my neighborhood definitely is filled with various bourgeois political signs whenever the ballot season arrives. Going to high school, the opposite of this was true for myself, all of my friends were conservatives (except for myself). I can run into what you're saying though if OP was moving near downtown or the South Hills.

I was raised in Eugene only left in the 80s to attend higher and never made it dorsum other than to visit friends and family and catch the occasional Duck game. In fact over the years pretty much all the family and friends I had from that time have drifted away.

Looking at the people I nevertheless know about from my graduating class I would say that those who left boondocks and never looked back have been almost universally more successful than those who stayed. Far every bit I can tell that is still pretty much the same. Information technology is a swell identify to exist a child but a tough place to get ahead if you stay.

The reason why it is tough if you stay is that there are fewer economic opportunities. UO graduates want to stay and if they tin't observe their niche they move to Portland. Tough for anyone to find a family wage job in Eugene.

I'm from at that place, but left when I was well-nigh 7. I loved it, and liked other places also, but sort of wish nosotros hadn't left. Since I'thou from there, I approximate I felt similar I belonged in that location more. I've lived in Corvallis most of my life, only somehow never really fit in here. :/

I take not been impressed with the schools in Eugene. We finally removed my girl from the public schoolhouse arrangement when she was almost finished with eye schoolhouse. We tried her neighborhood schoolhouse - Cal Young. They have been sued multiple times for bullying incidents and lost. The leadership team was changed twice in the few short years that we had her there. Then we moved her to a more alternative schoolhouse in Due south Eugene and the teachers didn't know the grade level math well enough to teach information technology. We likewise knew from friends with high school age students that most of the kids at Sheldon and Due south are not getting a complete teaching. They get in at 9:30 am and are finished at eleven:00 am. Nigh of our friends are sending their teens to LCC to round out their education. When I looked a couple of years agone, Springfield seemed to be doing a slightly amend job.

I don't know anyone at South who goes to school 90 minutes a twenty-four hours. My student has always had a total schedule. Our friends' children who have graduated accept all gone on to good universities and seem to be doing fine.
